Exercise: Managing Director

The purpose of this exercise is to simulate how you might think in this role. If you were the Managing Director of Outlier, how would you want to develop the accelerator? In this role you’ll have a high degree of ownership and autonomy. We’re looking for someone who thrives under zero-to-one environments, is strongly aligned to the mission of Outlier, and has an intuition for how to execute it.

Part 1: Pre-Launch

  • What would success look like to you by the end of the first cohort (6 months)? After 24 months?
  • What success metrics would you track for Outlier?
  • What flags would you want to look out for that might indicate something is not working?
  • What would you envision your team to look like?
    • What would be their responsibilities?
    • What would be your responsibilities?
      • What KPIs would you use to measure your performance in this role?
      • What would underperformance look like?

Part 2: Recruiting Participants

  • Who are 3 people that you think would be ideal participants for Outlier?
  • What strategies would you use to recruit participants for Outlier? (assume 40 participants)

Part 3: Kick-Off Retreat

Assume this is a 7-day in-person retreat.

  • What would you want to accomplish by the end of the retreat?
  • What are 3 workshops you’d design for the retreat?

Part 4: Community

  • What strategies would you use to build community and friendships within Outlier?
  • How would you keep the participants connected during their 3-month immersion in developing countries.

Bonus

  • If you had to raise a $3M fund to invest in Outlier companies, how would you do it? (note: this is not expected in the role, we just want to see your thought process).
